There are two types of frit that can be applied for digital printing on glass. VASGLASS possesses both technologies under the subsequent brand-names:
- Organic colors (same characteristics as with organic painted) – VAS-PRINT ORGANIC.
- Ceramic colors: (comparable to silk screen) – VAS-PRINT CERAMIC.
What sets these two types of technology apart is that organic printing can be applied on non-thermally treated glass (as an option, the glass substrate can also be treated thermally before the application), whereas with digital ceramic printing, thermal treatment of the glass after the application is mandatory.
As one would expect, the durability and longevity of a digitally printed application is directly related to the choice of material used for the coloring agent.
As opposed to organic colors, ceramic colors remain impervious to damage and unaltered over time. However, both technologies allow for laminating the painted side of the glass pane, in case of a laminate glass application. In the case of organic printing, it is highly recommended to laminate the printed side, whereas lamination is not a prerequisite for ceramic printing. Yet, another point of differentiation is that organic colors require protection against humidity and solar radiation, restricting their use solely to interior design applications, in stark contrast to the unrestricted range of applications for digital ceramic printing.
One of the major concerns for architects became the type of glass that would best conceal the structural elements of a building, as the use of architectural glass grew throughout the world, while fulfilling both the project’s technical constraints and design needs. This concern is even more evident in regions where temperatures could reach values of up to 100°C, combined with very high humidity levels.
